The Inclusive Learning Connection (ILC) is intended to be a network of Canadian organizations concerned with the learning technology needs of learners who are deaf, deafened, or hard of hearing.
The initial development phase of this project was completed by the partners mentioned below in January 2002. This phase was funded by the Office of Learning Technologies - Community Learning Network.
Further progress on this initiative is on hold pending receiving additional funding.
Learning technologies are increasingly being used to provide alternatives to traditional educational systems of learning. These include the Internet, email, audio or video conferencing and productivity software used to support collaboration in teams, presentations, publications and information management. It is essential that all learners, including those who are deaf, deafened, or hard or hearing, benefit from these technologies to achieve improved learning outcomes.
The ILC will undertake a survey to compile the first comprehensive review of the successful use of and barriers to the use of learning technologies by these learners. The next step will be the development of Learning Technology Guidelines to address the needs identified by the review. This will be an inclusive process soliciting input from concerned Canadian organizations and individuals.
The current partners (The Canadian Hearing Society, Technology Initiatives Department; University of Toronto, Adaptive Technology Resource Centre; and Ryerson University, Centre for Learning Technologies) will actively seek interested stakeholders and partners to participate. Our goal is to achieve maximum participation and representation from various organizations and individuals across Canada concerned with the learning needs of Canadians who are deaf, deafened, or hard of hearing.
